S214: The athlete that I have identified is a Powerlifter, Chew Jun Feng (JF), who has competed at the tertiary and club level: Sports & Exercise Psychology Assignment, RP

The athlete that I have identified is a Powerlifter, Chew Jun Feng (JF), who has competed at the tertiary and club level. He had come in 3rd in the U66 sub-junior category in the Tertiary Powerlifting Union competition in October 2022. He plans to qualify to compete at the national level through a qualifier in December 2022.

In addition to using the ACSI questionnaire, I interviewed him to ask about his performance in his recent meeting. JF felt most pressured during his final squat attempt, as he was relatively weaker at this lift and had often dreaded it when training, as he had a run of poor squat performances in his training. He ended up failing his last squat attempt.

Powerlifting is a sport where athletes must apply technical mastery of the Squat, Bench, and Deadlift, under heavy and maximal loads. In addition to these demands, the athlete will have to listen to specific commands from the referees.

As such, this sport will have a high demand in terms of mental acuity and emotional regulation.

I have identified the Inverted U theory as a tool we can use to profile the sport. There is little room for error, resulting in the athlete having to be in a near-perfect state of emotional regulation to perform. As such, the inverted U will be extremely narrow.
