To discuss the ‘Right to Choose’ case scenario to gain greater understanding and knowledge around the ethical  considerations in palliative care practice along with gaining an insight into the implications and issues associated with
decision making in caring for patients at end of life.

This activity creates an opportunity in motivating and engage students with the main principles underpinning palliative care with a focus on the ethical principle of ‘Autonomy ‘applied to practice. It addresses the following module
learning outcomes:

LO1 – Critically analyze the influence of local, national, and international policy in the provision of palliative care service

LO2 – Explore higher-level communication dynamics within the concepts of well-being, distress, and suffering as they relate to supporting patients with a life-limiting illness

LO3 – Critically discuss the principles underpinning palliative care practice

LO6 – Demonstrate an appreciation of the professional commitment to the ethical principles required in the decision making encountered across the trajectory of a life limiting illness

LO7 – Demonstrate an appreciation of the need for self-awareness and preserving personal integrity in palliative care practice.
