Final Reflections
Effective instruction does not just happen. It is the result of careful research, planning, implementation, and reflection. For this application and reflection project, you will conduct 5 hours of on-site observations in an elementary classroom. For Observation 1 (2.5 hours), you will pay particular attention to how the teacher you observe shapes the classroom learning environment and manages student behavior. For Observation 2 (2.5 hours), you will focus on the instructional program and assessments used in an elementary classroom.
For the next two weeks (Modules 3-4), you will conduct 5 hours of on-site observations in an elementary classroom.
NOTE: These observations should be scheduled by the student and can be completed in the same classroom or two different classrooms depending on student and school preference.
Part 1: Observation 1: Understanding the Learning Environment – Classroom Management
Module 3 addresses the classroom environment and managing student behavior. During your first 2.5 hours of on-site classroom observation, observe and take notes that address the following:
· Describe the classroom in which you are completing the observation. Grade level? Content area(s)? Diversity of student population? Instructional style of teacher?
· How is the layout of the classroom utilized to meet students’ needs?
· What changes would you make?
· Describe the behavior management strategies used in this classroom for the group and individuals. Are the strategies effective or ineffective? What observations support your appraisal?
· Record any other observations that are appropriate to the topics of classroom environment.
NOTE: These notes will be combined with the notes from the second observation and the final reflections to create your final project for the course. You will only make one submission at the end of Module 5.
Part 2: Observation 2: Understanding the Learning Environment – Lesson Planning and Assessment
In Module 4, you learn about the instructional and assessment programs in elementary classrooms. During your second on-site classroom observation, observe and record answers to the following:
· Describe the classroom in which you are completing the observation. Grade level? Content area(s)? Diversity of student population? Instructional style of teacher?
· Using the lesson plan template as your guide, focus your observations on identifying the specific aspects of lesson planning you observe through lesson implementation. Some items to consider:
·
o Types of instructional groupings
o Assessment practices
o Lesson implementation
o Pre-teaching and re-teaching
o Modifications and/or accommodations
· Record other observations that are appropriate to the topics of the instructional program and assessments.
NOTE: These notes will be combined with the notes from the first observation and the final reflections to create your final project for the course. You will only make one submission at the end of Module 5.
Part 3: Finalizing and Formatting the Project
Choose a format for the assignment submission. It can be in the form of a paper or presentation (PowerPoint or Prezi, for example). The assignment submission should include the following components:
· Compose an introduction and conclusion.
· Include information from all topics address in the notes from Module 3 and Module 4. You must include classroom photos to support your observation description. Do not include photos of learners.
· Conclude your assignment with a one-paragraph reflection on your Modules 3 and 4 observation experiences. Use the following question to guide your response:
o What considerations will you include as you make decisions about managing student behavior and planning instruction and assessment?
· Use APA format for the references and in-text citations. This applies to either assignment format you select.
· If you are submitting a paper, use 12-point Arial or Times New Roman font.
