the passage I chose:
“This morning, with the first light barely bathing Room 119, evil spirits descended on my world. For half an hour, the alarm on the machine that regulates my feeding tube has been beeping out into the void. I cannot imagine anything so inane or nerve-racking as this piercing beep beep beep pecking away at my brain, As a bonus, my sweat has unglued the tape that kept my right eyelid closed, and the stuck-together lashes are tickling my pupil unbearably.” (My Lucky Day)
example from another student:
Sometimes it just feels like you’re having the worst day imaginable. Any day you’re waking up with all these things connected to you is definitely not the way you want to start a day. Hospitals typically aren’t places that bring you good memories and this is no different. It seems as if everything that could go wrong is currently going wrong. I remember when I broke my leg back in my sophomore year of high school. The ambulance ride was obviously very unpleasant, the one of the things that always stuck in my head about it was the machine that wouldn’t stop beeping. As if I didn’t already have enough to deal with, I couldn’t tune out this annoying noise no matter what I did. So I can imagine just what she is feeling is worse because she is also dealing with an eye injury which just makes everything less enjoyable. It is very important to stay positive even when it doesn’t seem like it’s possible. The mindset you have for everything will change the way you look at things. If you try really hard to smile and do everything in your power to get better, then that’s really all you can do. At the end of the day you are going to get out of things whatever you put into it so if you keep chugging along chances are good that you’ll come out on top.
