Purpose
The purpose of writing this comparison or contrast essay is not to state what is apparent but rather to shed light on subtle differences or unexpected similarities between two texts.
You can compare the authors’ audience, tone, purpose, and style; writing vs. speech genre; and themes such as language barriers and discrimination; language oppression and redemption; experiences with language and cultures; power of language; equality and inequality, etc.
Note: Please avoid comparing the authors’ biographical information; instead, analyze the authors’ text.

Requirements
Include a clear thesis that addresses the essay prompt.
Briefly summarize both texts in the introductory paragraph.
For each body paragraph, incorporate at least one piece of evidence, in the form of a direct or partial quotation and/or paraphrase, followed by in-depth analysis.
Carefully analyze and skillfully incorporate your sources as evidence in your argument.
Provide a signal or lead-in phrase before the quotation.
Provide correct parenthetical citations by including the author’s last name and page number, if applicable.
Include a separate correct Works Cited page (Links to an external site.)(https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/mla_style/mla_formatting_and_style_guide/mla_sample_works_cited_page.html (Links to an external site.)) (which should be your last page), listing your sources in alphabetical order.

Audience
Assume that you are writing to a college-level audience. Adhere to Academic Writing Convention(https://courses.lumenlearning.com/englishcomp1/chapter/tone-language-and-appeal/ (Links to an external site.)). No first person–only third person point of view.
