Addressing this question is the first step in clarifying priorities and giving direction to everyone in the organization” (p. 58). Vision: Answers the question “WHAT do we hope to become?” “Whereas mission establishes an organization’ s purpose, vision instills an organization with a sense of direction. It asks, ‘If we are true to our purpose now, what might we become at some point in the future?’ Vision presents a realistic, credible, attractive future for the organization-a future that is better and more desirable in significant ways than existing conditions” (p. 62). Values and Collective Committments: Answers the question “HOW must we behave in order to make our shared vision a reality?” “While a mission statement asks the school to consider why it exists, and a vision statement asks what it might become, a statement of core values asks people to clarify how they intend to make their shared vision a reality… it challenges the people within that organization to identify the specific attitudes, behaviors, and commitments they must demonstrate in order to advance toward their vision” (p. 88). Goals: Answers the question “Which steps will we take first, and when? How will we know all of this is making a difference?” “. . .This task determines what must be accomplished first, the specific steps that must be taken to achieve the objectives, and the timeline for the process. Demographics, Mission, Vision, Values and Goals Instructions Curriculum management and development should begin with a clear understanding of the mission, vision, values, and goals of the organization. There should then be an analysis and reflection on the characteristics of the learners served and the community in which they are located. This demographic information will provide context to the curriculum that can help guide curriculum leaders to ensure a more authentic and practical curriculum. Using the definitions and template included in Blackboard, the candidate will articulate the demographic description (1 page), mission statement (1 page), vision (1 page), values (1 page) and goals (1 page) for the school being studied or the simulated school (if candidate is not presently employed in a school setting). Each candidate will explain how the information they have provided will impact the development of the curriculum for the school they are describing. Your demographic information should include the size of the student body, the demographics of the community, the school’s facilities, the structure of the school program (block scheduling, how many periods, self-contained classes, STEM, STEAM, magnet school, charter school, private school, etc.), and the extra-curricular offerings. Be sure to review the terminology document and use the template provided to complete the assignment. In the Response section, if you are using information from a school you are working for, you should state your opinion about the quality of each descriptor (mission, vision, values and/or goals) and provide a suggestion for improving each. For the demographic section, state your opinion and suggestion for the facilities, structure, offerings, etc. If you are using your own material, you must justify your information in the response of each section. Mission, Vision, Values and/or Goals for Arkansas schools can usually be found on their district website under ‘Report to the Public’ or ‘State Required Information: School Improvement Plan’ or something similar. So, using the provided template, there are four things to include for each element: 1. Articulate/state each element 2. Explain how each impacts the development of the curriculum 3. In the Response section, provide response for each, which includes: a. Opinion of the quality of the element (for the Demographics section, opinion of structure, facilities, and offerings) b.
