A small Irish cybersecurity company offers consultancy services that included Open Source Threat Intelligence analysis to create a “Security Scorecard”: Security Analysis Research Paper, UCD, Ireland

A small Irish cybersecurity company offers consultancy services that included Open Source Threat Intelligence analysis to create a “Security Scorecard” for internet-facing digital assets. They use a paid-for SaaS service called Black Kite to accomplish this.

This threat assessment report forms the foundation of the customer’s risks and how to remediate them. Failure to identify a security vulnerability will result in the failure to address it as part of the remediation plan.

The purpose of this research paper is to review and analyze the current market for threat and vulnerability tools and services, both paid-for and free for public-facing infrastructure.

The end result is to Increase the detection mechanisms through additional services and/or the use of open-source tools that will result in better threat detection coverage. Given the limited technical skillset of the users of this service, there is a need to look at automating the additional threat detection mechanisms where possible to reduce the time and effort of process execution.

The Black Kite service uses non-intrusive assessments to collect data from publicly available sources and performs contextualization and analysis to convert data into risk intelligence. There is an opportunity here to use more permissive vulnerability scanning to build an in-depth assessment that will complement the Black Kite service findings.

It has been noted that many customers are using CMS applications such as WordPress which are not adequately covered for vulnerability management through the Black kite service. This could be an opportunity to add vulnerability detections using such tools as wp scan or similar tools or services. Paid-for services like Black Kite give ease of use and rich reporting, whereas free tools like wp can give greater control over the execution but lack rich reporting capabilities.
